For the first line-up Blackmore used the band Elf, minus guitarist Steve Edwards of course! 

Elf had been signed to Purple Records and had also been used as Deep Purple's support act.  

This line-up recorded the debut album 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.'

However Blackmore recruited new musicians prior to launching Rainbow on the stage and as such this line-up never performed live.
