RITCHIE BLACKMORE
|
A MAN, A GUITAR, A
LEGEND
|
|
|
A Ritchie Blackmore musical is to be staged on 28th
April in Rome.
RITCHIE BLACKMORE
A Man, A Guitar, A Legend
The show aims to represent the story of the guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore in a musical excursion from the beginning to nowadays and sees the alternation of bands on stage that trace, through the execution of songs and medleys, the most significant groups which Ritchie was the founder of (Deep Purple and Rainbow) and ending with Blackmore's Night.
The project includes a narrator who, during the show, gives general
information about the Master's life, beginning with the most basic such as birth and childhood to the beginning of his career and then continues with his musical history, enriched by anecdotes and curiosity.
There will also be a screen on which images and films scroll during narration from one song/medley to another.
The show will end with an explosion of colours by background and medieval/renaissance costumes of the last Ritchie’s group: Blackmore's Night.

announcement that Ritchie has become a father again at the age of 65!
Candice gave birth to a daughter on 27th May. They have called her

inspiration behind the next Blackmore's Night album, to be called Autumn

CHILDLINE ROCKS
|
|

|
On Monday 1st June Jon Lord and Glenn Hughes reunited for the first
time in 33 years at the Childline charity gig at London's Indigo2.
As with the previous years event it was a superb night, brilliantly
organised and hosted by BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris. Lord performed
Pictured Within with Steve Balsamo, then Thunder joined them on stage
for a superb version of Child In Time, that had the hairs on the back of
my neck stand up!
Glenn Hughes then entered the stage and did a great version of You
Keep On Moving with Lord - another magical moment. Lord then left
and Hughes raised the roof with a blistering Mistreated followed by Soul
Mover with shared vocals with Thunder's Danny Bowes.
The show was recorded and the CD was available after the show! It can also be ordered from
www.concertlive.co.uk
Special thanks to Childline organiser Daryl Clark and to Bob
Harris for making it a great evening.
Last year Hughes and Paice, this year Hughes and Lord, what are
the chances of Hughes and Blackmore next year!

TOUR ENDS WITH DEPARTURE

Hot off the press comes the news that backing

current German Tour. Allegedly due to some dispute over their own CDs
being sold with the merchandise. Evidently this has had a knock on
effect with regard to the forthcoming DVD release, which has now been
put back to October, because they plan on making some new promo
videos to accompany it. Apparently new backing singer or singers have
already been lined-up.

|
Ritchie's former sixties band mate,
Tony Dangerfield was found dead at his home on Saturday (21st July).
Tony was one of the many faces I interviewed for the book and we kept in
touch ever since. His new album has recently been released and was
reviewed in MBTP 33.
Called 'The Rebel's Got Soul' it perfectly summed Tony up. He had just
been barred from his local pub where he has been going for decades,
because he refused to take any notice of the new smoking
bans!
A rebel to the end, he will be missed by all those who knew

I DVD RELEASE
|
|
The entire broadcast of Deep Purple
MKI on Hugh Hefner's Playboy After Dark is now, for the first time,
officially released on DVD, titled Playboy After Dark, Collection Two.
Rami Mähkä recently got this and
says, "While some other artists had two tracks (artists usually did two numbers in a show), DP only had one: Hush. I was afraid of the worst! But I just hit Hush, and then, fingers crossed,
rewinded... and it was all there! It's thrilling, it's brilliant! The band do a short version of And the Address (check out Rod's dance moves!), then a nervous RB gives Hugh
(Hefner) a guitar lesson, and the latter then does a short interview with a notably cool
Lordy. The band then do (the previously released) Hush. The coolest DP archive clip for a long, long time!"
It's worth pointing out that this is a box set with 6 hours of stuff
from the show, and Purple's bit is only a few minutes long. I'm sure it
will appear on a proper Purple compilation in the future, so unless you
need this now, it might be worth to wait a while.
Thanks to Rami Mähkä for the info.

DEEP PURPLE

ON THE
BEEB!
|
|

|
A new series called Seven Ages of Rock started on BBC 2, Saturday May
19th.
The fourth one in the series was broadcast the weekend of 10th June, entitled Never Say Die.
It centred around the most controversial and misunderstood of all rock
genres- heavy rock. With Black Sabbath as the undisputed Godfathers. The
show also included Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and
Metallica, but was rather perfunctory. How many people watching
didn't know the Smoke On The Water story? And if they didn't then in my
view they would be better off sticking with Eastenders!
For
more details on the series check the BBC
website.

BLACKMORE'S
NIGHT
|
UK
GIG
|
|
It has just come to our attention that Blackmore's Night will no longer be performing at
the 3 Wishes Faery Fest on Sat 23rd June 2007 at Colliford Lake Park, Bolventor, Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, UK.
No doubt some of Ritchie's fans will be relieved, while others who had
already ordered tickets will be disappointed. The reasons have not been
explained but one fan who enquired about tickets was told by the
festival organiser Karen Kay; "I have literally just been informed by Carole Stevens, the manager of Blackmore's Night that they will no longer be performing at the festival, which is very disappointing indeed."
Maybe the thought of possibly wearing faery wings on stage was too much
for Mr. B!
We understand that other UK dates will be announced soon.
Thanks to Pete Lewis for the info.

DAVID COVERDALE
|
MKIII?
NOT QUITE YET!
|
|
Recently on Nicky Horne's show on Planet Rock
Radio, David Coverdale played down the possibilities of a reunion of the
Deep Purple MKIII line-up. He suggested the rumours were spread by fans,
partly as a result on Coverdale recently signing to the same label as
Ritchie. He said he is happy with his career as it is, and thought
Ritchie felt the same way.

scene Saxondale gives a gift of a sculptured leopard to his daughter's boyfriend
telling him that he got it from Ritchie Blackmore the Deep Purple guitarist
before explaining that Ritchie gave it to him on the Rainbow Rising tour!

| BLACK
KNIGHT |
UNAUTHORISED BLACKMORE
BIOGRAPHY
|
|
Apart from Black Knight the
unauthorised biography written by Jerry
Bloom published by Omnibus Press on 4th September,
former Deep Purple and Rainbow tour manager Colin Hart has written a
book and is currently negotiating publishing deals. There is also
supposed to be at least one other book on Blackmore being
written.
It has also recently been announced that Ritchie is participating with
"Doc Calvinson" on a book. An official statement from Minstrel Hall music
said: "Candice and Ritchie have authorized Doc Calvinson to write their stories. It will be The musical history of Ritchie Blackmore-past and present - as well as their own biographical account of Blackmore's Night. This book will be accurate as they are participating in the authoring. If you want to read the true story this will be the one to
read." Make of that what you will! Whether or not it is
Ritchie's response to the other books currently in the pipeline is at
this stage unclear.

NIGHT OF HONOUR Sunday 26th
March
|
Ritchie, Carlo & Rick Brown in 1962
© Neil Newsome |
The night of honour at Clarendon Hall, York House,
Twickenham to celebrate the life of the late Carlo Little who passed away last
August was a great success. All proceeds from this event were donated to the South Tyneside Hospital, Ward 10 for terminally ill patients where Carlo spent his last weeks.
And a fair amount of money was raised. During the auction one
guy paid £950 for a fully signed Rolling Stones 2006 tour T-shirt! I
pulled out of the bidding at £900 when I realised it wasn't my size!

| CLASSIC
ROCK |
MARCH ISSUE
|
 |
Ritchie featured on the front cover of the March issue of Classic Rock,
published on 8th
February. It is part of a 'where are they now' feature but if you are
expecting a highly complimentary article think again! Bear in mind the
front cover says "From Deep Purple to Rainbow to folk playing
pixie."
Are daggers drawn? Read what Pete Makowski has to say
about Blackmore's Night. MBTP31 will look at the response to the
article with Makowski's response to the criticism as well.
Classic Rock & Metal Hammer's Rock 'Decades: 1980' had a four page
Deep Purple article.

BBC's Top Gear motoring programme survey to find the nations favourite all-time
driving tune had Highway Star making it to the shortlist of 5, along with Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild, Radar Love by Golden
Earring,
Queen's Don't Stop Me Now & Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell. Sadly it
only ended up in fifth place, with Queen eventually polling the most
votes. You clearly didn't vote enough times between you all!
